Self-care skills timeline
When you expect your child to do things for themselves, like dressing, feeding and washing, and whether you push early independence or follow readiness.
When should a child learn to dress, cook and look after themselves?
In short: Parents choose between 3 main approaches: Early independence targets; Follow readiness; Parent does it until asked. Evidence: evidence leans one way. Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational. Best settled: preschool.

Self-care skills timeline: what are the options?
Parents usually land on one of these 3 approaches.
1. Early independence targets
You set ages by which the child dresses, packs a bag or makes a snack alone.
2. Follow readiness
You hand over each skill when the child seems ready.
3. Parent does it until asked
You keep doing these things until the child wants to take over.
Self-care skills timeline: what does the evidence say?
Evidence leans one way. Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational.
The CDC's developmental milestones are what 75% or more of children can do by a given age, which makes them a useful reality check for expectations: by age 3 most children put on some clothes by themselves (such as loose pants or a jacket) and use a fork; by age 4 most serve themselves food or pour water with supervision and undo some buttons. They are not a substitute for developmental screening, so raise concerns with your pediatrician. How fast to push independence beyond these benchmarks is a family choice

What else is worth knowing?
Self-care skills include dressing, packing a school bag and making simple food. Doing things for a child is faster and delays their independence. Children vary in when they are ready.
Questions to ask each other
- What should a three-year-old do alone, and a six-year-old?
- How patient can we be when it takes longer?
- How do we keep from doing it for them?
