About
A way for two parents to decide things together
Raising Your Child is a free web app. Two parents go through parenting decisions together, one at a time, and keep what they agree as a plan.
The problem it solves
Most couples find out where they disagree about parenting at the moment a decision is due, often tired and under pressure. The app moves those conversations earlier. You look at one decision at a time, with the options and the evidence in front of you both, and talk about it when there is time.
How it works
- Pick where to start. The stage you are in, or the areas on your mind.
- Take one decision together. Each one lays out the real options and how strong the evidence is.
- Talk it through and decide. Settle what you can and flag the rest to discuss.
- Keep your plan. Everything you agreed sits on one page.
If you would rather not sway each other, each of you can answer separately first. Compare, under Our plan, then shows where you match and where you differ.
What it covers
281 decisions in 23 areas, from pregnancy and birth through the teen years. You can read every topic without using the app.
How each topic is made
Every topic has the same parts: a plain explanation of the decision, the options parents choose between, what guidance and research say, links to sources, and questions to ask each other. 253 of the 281 topics link to at least one source, such as a pediatric body, a public-health agency or a published study. The app does not rank the options.
What the evidence labels mean
Each topic carries one of six labels, so you can tell a settled question from a matter of taste.
- Well established (32 topics)
- Guidance and evidence agree. The real question is whether you'll follow it.
- Evidence leans one way (77 topics)
- Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational.
- Experts disagree (34 topics)
- Credible bodies or researchers disagree — decide whose guidance you'll weigh.
- Guidance changing (5 topics)
- Official guidance changed recently and is still moving — check current sources.
- New territory (1 topics)
- Guidance is running ahead of the research.
- Your call (132 topics)
- No outcome evidence picks a winner. Preference, culture, money and logistics decide.
What it is not
It is not medical advice and it does not replace your doctor, midwife or pediatrician. It is secular. It does not tell you which choice is right.
