# Gendered toys, clothes and expectations

**How do we handle gendered toys, clothes and expectations?**

Whether you follow traditional ideas about what boys and girls play with and wear, follow your child's preferences, mix deliberately, or raise children without gender expectations.

In short: Parents choose between 4 main approaches: Traditional; Follow the child's preferences; Deliberately mixed; Gender-open parenting. Evidence: evidence leans one way. Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational. Best settled: during pregnancy.

## Gendered toys, clothes and expectations: what are the options?

1. **Traditional**: Boys get boys' things and girls get girls' things.
2. **Follow the child's preferences**: The child chooses, whatever the result.
3. **Deliberately mixed**: You offer toys and clothes from both sides on purpose.
4. **Gender-open parenting**: You do not assign a gender, and let the child tell you in time.

## Gendered toys, clothes and expectations: what does the evidence say?

**Evidence leans one way.** Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational. (Leans (mixed evidence))

A meta-analysis of 75 studies (113 effect sizes) found large average differences in toy preferences: boys prefer male-typical toys and girls female-typical toys, the gaps grow with age, and forced-choice methods exaggerate them. Studies of parents who aim for gender-neutral parenting find they still buy more gender-typed toys than neutral ones, and that parents shape children's preferences through repeated exposure over time; parents who try it report that it widens what children feel free to try, but I found no study of long-term child outcomes. Which direction to lean is a values call

## What else is worth knowing?

From birth, children are offered different toys, clothes and expectations according to sex. Parents choose how much to follow or resist that. Relatives' gifts are often where this first comes up.

## Questions to ask each other

- What did we play with and wear, and how did that feel?
- How would we react if our child wants toys or clothes others call opposite?
- What do we want to avoid saying?
