# Schedules or baby-led routines

**Should our baby be on a sleep schedule or follow their own rhythm?**

Whether you follow the baby's cues for feeding and sleep, build a flexible routine, or set a firm schedule.

In short: Parents choose between 4 main approaches: Fully baby-led; Flexible routine and wake windows; Structured schedule; Parent-directed feeding and sleep. Evidence: evidence leans one way. Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational. Best settled: 0–6 months.

## Schedules or baby-led routines: what are the options?

1. **Fully baby-led**: You follow the baby's cues for sleep and feeding with no set times.
2. **Flexible routine and wake windows**: You keep a loose rhythm based on how long the baby can stay awake.
3. **Structured schedule**: You follow set times for naps, feeds and bedtime.
4. **Parent-directed feeding and sleep**: You decide when the baby feeds and sleeps, and the baby adapts.

## Schedules or baby-led routines: what does the evidence say?

**Evidence leans one way.** Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational. (Leans (newborn feeding))

For newborn feeding the AAP's breastfeeding policy calls for feeding in response to hunger cues, about 8-12 times in 24 hours, rather than by the clock; the AAP has reportedly warned that rigid parent-directed schedules such as the Babywise books can contribute to poor weight gain and dehydration. For sleep, no trial found compares schedules with baby-led routines, and gentle structure such as wake windows versus fully baby-led is a preference once feeding needs are met

## What else is worth knowing?

Newborns do not keep a schedule, but a rhythm usually appears within a few months. Some parents shape it early with set times; others follow the baby. Wake windows are the stretches a baby can comfortably stay awake between sleeps.

## Questions to ask each other

- Do we picture a flexible routine or a firm schedule?
- How do we each cope with unpredictability?
- What would make us change our approach?
