# Daily limits, ages 2-5

**How much screen time is okay for ages 2 to 5?**

How you limit screens for preschoolers: a fixed time cap, a soft cap with quality rules, or no clock and judging by the AAP's five questions (Child, Content, Calm, Crowding Out, Communication).

In short: Parents choose between 4 main approaches: Fixed one-hour cap (WHO, CPS); Soft cap plus quality rules; No clock, judged by the 5 Cs (AAP); Unrestricted. Evidence: experts disagree. Credible bodies or researchers disagree — decide whose guidance you'll weigh. Best settled: toddler.

## Daily limits, ages 2-5: what are the options?

1. **Fixed one-hour cap (WHO, CPS)**: The child gets at most one hour a day, as the WHO and Canadian Paediatric Society advise.
2. **Soft cap plus quality rules**: You aim for about an hour and also care what the child watches.
3. **No clock, judged by the 5 Cs (AAP)**: You do not count minutes; you weigh the child, the content, calm-down use, what screens crowd out, and communication, as the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests.
4. **Unrestricted**: The child uses screens without limits.

## Daily limits, ages 2-5: what does the evidence say?

**Experts disagree.** Credible bodies or researchers disagree — decide whose guidance you'll weigh. (Contested on format)

The AAP's January 2026 policy statement drops duration-based limits in favor of context, content and conversation, while WHO and the CPS still publish a one-hour ceiling. The AAP says causal conclusions remain limited, though associations are consistent across study types

## What else is worth knowing?

The WHO and the Canadian Paediatric Society suggest under an hour a day at this age. The American Academy of Pediatrics now puts less weight on minutes and more on what the child watches and what it replaces. You can choose a clock, a set of principles, or both.

## Questions to ask each other

- What does a reasonable amount of screen time look like to each of us?
- Which of the five questions (Child, Content, Calm, Crowding Out, Communication) matters most to us?
- How will we adjust on sick days and long trips?
