# Homework involvement

**How much should we help with homework?**

How much you help with homework: hands-off, setting the routine and space, available on request, sitting alongside, or teaching and correcting.

In short: Parents choose between 5 main approaches: Hands-off; Set the routine and space; Available on request; Sit alongside daily; Actively teach and correct. Evidence: evidence leans one way. Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational. Best settled: school age.

## Homework involvement: what are the options?

1. **Hands-off**: Homework is the child's responsibility.
2. **Set the routine and space**: You provide a regular time and place and leave the work to the child.
3. **Available on request**: You help only when the child asks.
4. **Sit alongside daily**: You sit with the child each day while they work.
5. **Actively teach and correct**: You explain the material and fix mistakes.

## Homework involvement: what does the evidence say?

**Evidence leans one way.** Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational.

Supportive involvement helps; intrusive, controlling involvement hurts

## What else is worth knowing?

Parents range from leaving homework entirely to the child to teaching alongside them. Help that supports a child's independence tends to work better than taking over. The right level changes with age.

## Questions to ask each other

- How much did our parents help us, and did it help?
- How much should we help our child?
- What do we do if our child is stuck and frustrated?
