# A child who is ahead

**What should we do if our child is ahead at school?**

How you would respond if your child is far ahead of their classmates: enrichment, a gifted program, subject acceleration or skipping a grade.

In short: Parents choose between 5 main approaches: Keep with age peers, enrich at home; In-class enrichment; Gifted program; Subject acceleration; Grade skip. Evidence: evidence leans one way. Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational. Best settled: school age.

## A child who is ahead: what are the options?

1. **Keep with age peers, enrich at home**: The child stays in the regular class and gets extra challenge at home.
2. **In-class enrichment**: The teacher gives harder or deeper work within the class.
3. **Gifted program**: The child joins a separate program for advanced learners.
4. **Subject acceleration**: The child takes one subject with an older grade.
5. **Grade skip**: The child moves up a full year.

## What else is worth knowing?

Schools handle advanced learners in different ways, from extra work in class to moving up a grade. Research on acceleration is generally positive for children who are ready. Social fit and the child's own wishes matter too.

## Questions to ask each other

- How would we feel if our child were far ahead?
- What would we want the school to do?
- What would we worry about if they skipped a grade?
