# Water safety

**When should swimming lessons start, and how do we keep our child safe around water?**

How you teach water safety and swimming: lessons from a young age, infant survival-swim programs, or lessons later with fencing and supervision.

In short: Parents choose between 3 main approaches: Swim lessons from age 1; Infant survival-swim programs; Lessons at 4 or later; pool fencing. Evidence: well established. Guidance and evidence agree. The real question is whether you'll follow it. Best settled: 6–12 months.

## Water safety: what are the options?

1. **Swim lessons from age 1**: Swimming lessons begin at about one.
2. **Infant survival-swim programs**: The baby takes a course that teaches them to float and breathe if they fall in.
3. **Lessons at 4 or later; pool fencing**: Lessons begin at four or older, and any pool is fenced on all sides.

## Water safety: what does the evidence say?

**Well established.** Guidance and evidence agree. The real question is whether you'll follow it.

Drowning is the leading cause of death at ages 1-4; lessons can begin after 1; no evidence infant lessons reduce drowning

## What else is worth knowing?

Drowning is a leading cause of death in young children and happens quickly and quietly. Lessons, close supervision and four-sided fencing around pools each reduce the risk; none replaces the others. Infant survival-swim programs are debated among pediatric bodies.

## Questions to ask each other

- How comfortable are we with water, and how well do we each swim?
- When do we want lessons?
- What rules do we want around pools, lakes and baths?
