# Mental load and task ownership

**How do we share the mental load of parenting?**

Who notices, plans and remembers everything a child needs (appointments, clothes, forms, supplies), not just who does the tasks. Owning a whole area is different from helping with it.

In short: Parents choose between 4 main approaches: One household manager who delegates; Full ownership by domain (Fair Play style); Shared lists; Regular renegotiation meeting. Evidence: your call. No outcome evidence picks a winner. Preference, culture, money and logistics decide. Best settled: during pregnancy.

## Mental load and task ownership: what are the options?

1. **One household manager who delegates**: One of you keeps track of everything and asks the other to do specific tasks.
2. **Full ownership by domain (Fair Play style)**: Each of you fully owns whole areas, including noticing and planning, as in the Fair Play method.
3. **Shared lists**: You keep shared lists and both work from them.
4. **Regular renegotiation meeting**: You hold a regular meeting to divide up tasks again.

## Mental load and task ownership: what does the evidence say?

**Your call.** No outcome evidence picks a winner. Preference, culture, money and logistics decide.

Anticipating and monitoring are the most unequal parts; no trial of Fair Play found

## What else is worth knowing?

The mental load is the noticing, planning and remembering behind the tasks, such as knowing the baby needs bigger clothes before they run out. It is often invisible and often falls on one person. Dividing by full ownership of an area, rather than helping when asked, shares it more evenly.

## Questions to ask each other

- What is something that always seems to land on one person to remember?
- Which areas, like appointments or supplies, would each of us like to fully own?
- How will we notice if the invisible work is getting lopsided?
