# Postpartum support model

**What help should we line up for the weeks after the birth?**

What help you will have after the birth: just the two of you, family, or paid help during the day or overnight.

In short: Parents choose between 4 main approaches: Couple alone; Family help; Paid daytime help (postpartum doula); Overnight paid help. Evidence: your call. No outcome evidence picks a winner. Preference, culture, money and logistics decide. Best settled: during pregnancy.

## Postpartum support model: what are the options?

1. **Couple alone**: The two of you manage on your own.
2. **Family help**: Relatives come to help.
3. **Paid daytime help (postpartum doula)**: You hire a postpartum doula or helper for daytime support.
4. **Overnight paid help**: You hire someone to care for the baby at night.

## Postpartum support model: what does the evidence say?

**Your call.** No outcome evidence picks a winner. Preference, culture, money and logistics decide.

Doula care is linked to less postpartum depression and anxiety, much of it observational

## What else is worth knowing?

The weeks after birth are physically and emotionally demanding. Help can come from family, friends or paid support, by day or overnight. Arrange it before the birth, because it is hard to organize when you are exhausted.

## Questions to ask each other

- What help will we have in the first weeks, and what would we want if money were no issue?
- Would we rather have family stay with us or have our space?
- Who is the person we would call at three in the morning?
