# Sampling or specializing

**Should our child try many activities or specialize early?**

Whether your child tries many sports through adolescence or settles on one early and plays it year-round.

In short: Parents choose between 3 main approaches: Many sports through adolescence; Sample, then specialize in the mid-teens; One sport year-round from childhood. Evidence: evidence leans one way. Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational. Best settled: school age.

## Sampling or specializing: what are the options?

1. **Many sports through adolescence**: The child plays several sports into their teens.
2. **Sample, then specialize in the mid-teens**: The child tries several, then focuses on one at about 15.
3. **One sport year-round from childhood**: The child trains in one sport all year from a young age.

## Sampling or specializing: what does the evidence say?

**Evidence leans one way.** Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational.

AAP: several sports at least until puberty, with rest days; world-class adults mostly sampled as children

## What else is worth knowing?

Specializing means training in one sport year-round. Sports-medicine bodies advise against doing so before the mid-teens, because of overuse injuries and burnout. Playing several sports is the more common advice.

## Questions to ask each other

- Do we want our child to try many sports or pick one?
- What would we do if a coach pushed specializing early?
- Who decides, our child or us?
