# Chore start age and enforcement

**At what age should chores start, and how do we enforce them?**

At what age chores begin and how firmly you hold to them: from age two or three to the teens, and with routines and reminders or by invitation only.

In short: Parents choose between 7 main approaches: Start at 2-3; Preschool; School age; Teens; invitation only; Routine and reminders; Chart with rewards; Loss of privileges. Evidence: your call. No outcome evidence picks a winner. Preference, culture, money and logistics decide. Best settled: toddler.

## Chore start age and enforcement: what are the options?

1. **Start at 2-3**: Chores begin at two or three.
2. **Preschool**: Chores begin at about four or five.
3. **School age**: Chores begin once the child is in school.
4. **Teens; invitation only**: Chores begin in the teen years, and the child is asked, not required.
5. **Routine and reminders**: Chores are part of the daily routine and you remind the child.
6. **Chart with rewards**: A chart tracks chores and the child earns something for completing them.
7. **Loss of privileges**: The child loses something they enjoy when chores are skipped.

## Chore start age and enforcement: what does the evidence say?

**Your call.** No outcome evidence picks a winner. Preference, culture, money and logistics decide.

## What else is worth knowing?

Children can begin simple tasks, such as putting toys away, at two or three. The harder part is what you do when a chore is not done. Reminders, charts and lost privileges each have supporters.

## Questions to ask each other

- At what age should chores start?
- What happens when the chore is not done?
- How do we make it a routine instead of a battle?
