# Picky eating

**How should we handle a picky eater?**

How you respond when a child refuses most foods: cooking a separate meal, serving one family meal with a safe food on the table, one meal take-it-or-leave-it, hiding vegetables, or repeated exposure without comment.

In short: Parents choose between 5 main approaches: Separate kid meal; One family meal with a "safe" food; One meal, eat it or wait; Hidden vegetables; Repeated exposure without comment. Evidence: evidence leans one way. Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational. Best settled: toddler.

## Picky eating: what are the options?

1. **Separate kid meal**: You cook the child something different from the family meal.
2. **One family meal with a "safe" food**: Everyone gets the same meal, which always includes one food the child reliably eats.
3. **One meal, eat it or wait**: There is one meal; a child who does not eat it waits until the next.
4. **Hidden vegetables**: You blend vegetables into foods the child accepts.
5. **Repeated exposure without comment**: You keep offering a food calmly, many times, without pressure.

## Picky eating: what does the evidence say?

**Evidence leans one way.** Research or guidance points in a direction, but it's thin, small or correlational.

Acceptance of a new vegetable or fruit typically rises after 8 or more exposures

## What else is worth knowing?

Refusing foods is common in toddlers and usually passes. Children often need to be offered a food many times before accepting it. How you respond, with pressure, short-order cooking or patience, shapes mealtimes for years.

## Questions to ask each other

- How picky were we, and what helped or made it worse?
- What would we do if our child only ate three foods?
- How do we keep mealtimes calm?
