# Tummy time and "containers"

**How much tummy time does a baby need, and how long in bouncers and swings?**

Tummy time is placing a baby on their stomach while awake and watched, to strengthen the neck and shoulders. "Containers" are things like bouncers, swings and car seats that hold a baby. The decision is how your baby's awake time is split between floor time and being held in devices.

In short: Parents choose between 3 main approaches: Mostly floor time; Mix of floor and seats or swings; Heavy reliance on seats. Evidence: well established. Guidance and evidence agree. The real question is whether you'll follow it. Best settled: around the birth.

## Tummy time and "containers": what are the options?

1. **Mostly floor time**: The baby spends most awake time on the floor, including on their tummy.
2. **Mix of floor and seats or swings**: The baby spends some time on the floor and some in seats, bouncers or swings.
3. **Heavy reliance on seats**: The baby spends much of the day in seats and swings.

## Tummy time and "containers": what does the evidence say?

**Well established.** Guidance and evidence agree. The real question is whether you'll follow it.

AAP: build to 15-30 minutes of supervised tummy time daily by 7 weeks; too much container time is tied to motor delay and flat head

## What else is worth knowing?

Time on the tummy while awake builds the strength a baby needs to roll and crawl. Seats and swings are convenient, and time in them is time not spent moving freely. The balance between the two shapes how the baby spends the day.

## Questions to ask each other

- How do we want our baby to spend awake time?
- How will we make floor time part of the day?
- What do we do when the baby only seems happy in a seat?
